Yeah for software tools, here's some good ones:

AntiVirus: AVG cause it's free and decent

Network Security:
1.Network Stumbler: Freeware, Wireless Network Finder, Works great
www(dot)netstumbler(dot)com
2.BackTrack3 cause it's not beta, or perhaps BackTrack4Beta - I'd just do a link to these, they're huge ISO's
3.NMAP 5.0: Brand new and works as good as always, comes with a GUI, perhaps just a link
4.Aircrack-ng both windows and unwindows
5.LockHunter- Really good tool that lets you know what process or program is using a file

Just ideas...

2. backtrack 4 is now out I believe. Haven't tried it since version2.
5. I like unlocker, it works good for me.
Avira is driving the trojan coders crazy. They are having some problems with detections.

Avast Antivirus is good
Spybot search and destroy
Goolag Scanner uses google to scan web sites for vulnerabilities
Google Chrome is the fastest browser to date and they worked out the flash thing

EDIT on the AVG, I switched to Avast! instead because it uses WAY less resources. It's free as well, but the paid version gives more control and adds browser protection if I remember correctly.
